Custom earplugs are made from an impression taken of your ear canals. Here is a short explanation of the process which will take place once you have selected which earplug provider you wish to purchase from.
Before visiting your audiologist
If you are prone to suffering from the build up of ear wax, or you have had this condition in the past, then it is usually best if you visit a doctor before making an appointment with your audiologist. This way your ears can be checked and any excessive amounts of wax can be removed.
If ear wax is allowed to build up, then the mould of your ear canal will not be totally accurate, because the excess wax will stop an effective seal being created. This in turn can lead to an earplug being made which does not fit you properly.
Also, if you have recently undergone any kind of surgery on your ears, then it really is best to allow your ears to fully heal before having a mould made. This allows your ears the time they need to return to their regular size and/or shape.
The process
When you first arrive for your appointment, the audiologist will begin by examining both of your ears, just to make sure there aren't any problems which could affect the accuracy of the mould. They may also ask you about your general state of health to make sure that the mould will definitely be able to be taken.
The next stage involves a small piece of cotton or foam being placed into your ear. This acts as a barrier and stops the material used to create the impression from coming into contact with your eardrum.
Once this barrier piece is in place, the audiologist will use a syringe to fill your ear canal with the impression material. It usually takes around 5 minutes to set, and in this time you will probably be asked not to speak and to keep very still. This makes sure that the mould can create a perfect seal with your ear canal.
It is really important that the audiologist places the block and the impression material past the second bend of your ear canal. This means that a deep seal is created with the bony part of the ear and makes for a high quality earplug.
After the material has set, the impression will be removed and your ears will be examined again to ensure that all the material has been removed. The next stage is to send the impressions of your ears off to the company to actually manufacture your earplugs. In some cases you are responsible for sending these, while in other cases the audiologist will send them.
Typically, your earplugs will be with you within about 21 days, however this time can vary from company to company, and can also depend on where you got your impression taken.
The company may ask that you go back to the audiologist for a fitting session. At this session you will be taught how to use your new custom earplugs. While this is not hard to do, we have found that when our clients are educated on how to properly use their earplugs, they experience much more effective noise reduction.
