You Don't Need To Suffer From Jet Lag

By Jason King

Jet lag can be a major problem when you fly. If you can avoid suffering from jet lag you'll have a much more pleasant vacation or business trip.

You can lessen the effect of jet lag by adjusting your sleeping pattern before you go abroad. You'll need to get your adjustments as close to your destination's time as possible. This will take some discipline but it is well worth trying, as it can make a difference.

Reducing the effects of jet lag isn't easy, but there are other things you can do as well. Try and catch a flight that arrives at your holiday destination in the daylight hours.

Landing during the day time makes it easier to avoid going to bed. Take a short nap if you really need to in a well lit place. When it's time that you should be going to bed you can then sleep in a darkened room.

During your first day you should try and avoid using a computer. You don't want to start over stimulating your brain so you then have trouble getting to sleep. Once the forst day or two are out of the way you can start using your computer if you need to.

It's a good idea to avoid any stimulants like coffee until your symptoms of jet lag wear off, as alcohol and caffeine can disrupt your sleep.

Jet lag only happens when you land on the other side of the world or water, and not many people realize this. That's the time when their biological clocks start making internal adjustments inside their bodies to more closely coincide with the local time at their destination.

Just crossing one or two time zones is usually easy to adjust too. Being in poor health, or not feeling very well can slow this adjustment down.

If you usually experience jet lag when you fly, you could take a melatonin capsule in the early evening before you go, and this will make adjusting to the new time zone easier.

You may still have to take a dose of melatonin for the next three or four evenings in a row before you go to bed during the start of your vacation or business trip. If you have never taken melatonin before, you should ask your doctor or local pharmacist for more information in regards to the suggested dosage.

This advice will help you get over your jet lag a lot sooner. Speak to your doctor first if there is anything you're unsure of.
