Save Money Buying Food...

By Kermil J. Fogarth

One of the family's greatest expenditures is for food. We all know that it is cheaper to eat at home than to go out to eat, but we also need to consider how we can save money in our grocery budget. Previously prepared foods are expensive so you may want to plan on cooking your own food to maximize savings. Before you head out for the grocery store, make a list of what you intend to buy to prevent buying unnecessary items. Purchasing in bulk quantities if possible can provide you with discounts as well.

One method of really saving is using coupons. Many people search for coupons but that shouldn't be a difficult task. There are sites on the internet where you can get coupons online and save time as well. Coupons are available for groceries as well as other household items so you can easily use them to cut your food bill.

Most stores have in-store specials using coupons and if you shop at the same store regularly, you will learn when they have specials and when they take coupons for their specials. The online coupon sites have current coupons and their information is usually up to date. You merely have to go to the site and choose the store you shop at and see what coupons are available for that store.

If you can shop without going shopping then you can save even more by ordering your groceries online or on the phone. Find a store that will deliver and take coupons and you can save even more since you won't be making any purchases you hadn't planned on. This method could be convenient and economical at the same time.

Some stores also offer special promotions where you can buy some items at a discounted price after spending a certain amount on groceries. At one local chain if you purchase over $100 in groceries in a month you get a discount on a fill up of gasoline. Oh, another tip is to eat before going shopping so you don't wind up buying food just because you are hungry.

So you can be smart and use discounts and coupons but there are other ways to save money. Bulk purchases has already been mentioned but this only saves your budget if you have a way of preserving what you don't immediately eat before it spoils. This could be done by drying, freezing or canning.
