I am sure that when you have looked at your Maine Coon Cat, and seen all that fur, your have probably wondered about what level of grooming is required. Now the answer to that depends on whether or not you intend to show your cat.
If you don't have any plans for showing you cat then there is actually very little by way of grooming required as Maine Coons are great at doing this job themselves, and they quite often do it far better than we can.
There are just 4 things that you need to remember to do to your Maine Coon, on a regular basis, providing that is that you do not intend to show your cat. The first of these is a good weekly brushing session. This helps to avoid the unpleasant thing called fur balls, and it also help to keep your carpets clear of fur.
The next thing that you need to do relates to your Maine Coon's teeth. Do keep a regular check on his teeth and gums, and report any problems to your Vet. Tartar control treats are helpful, but you must back this up with regular inspections.
Next up is on the subject of ticks and fleas. If your cat is allowed outside, or if it mixes with say a dog that is allowed outside, then there is a potential problem here from ticks and fleas, and you need to be watchful for this.
And then the final item which you need to be aware of is your cats claws. It is a good idea to clip them now and again, assuming that kitty will let you, as this helps reduce the number of scratches both to yourself, and to your furniture.
Now, if you are planning to show your Maine Coon then there is an awful lot more that you will need to do, but in most cases this is only in preparation for the show, and is not a daily need.
And one of those things, and perhaps the most important, is that your Maine Coon will need to be freshly bathed. Also do check that his nails, face and ears are all nicely cleaned.
